Legal Officer – First Assurance

About the role

The Legal Officer – First Assurance will provide legal counsel to the insurance division of Absa Bank, coordinate external advocates, negotiate claim settlements and manage recovery operations. This role supports the company’s litigation and regulatory compliance functions.

Key responsibilities

• Manage litigation processes, receive summons, determine liability and appoint service providers.
• Coordinate external advocates, review their correspondence, and give instructions on case handling.
• Negotiate third‑party claims out of court, maintain accurate reserves and ensure timely settlement or appeal decisions.
• Oversee recovery actions against third parties and insurance companies, including initiating suits and monitoring judgment payments.
• Prepare legal reports, opinions, and monthly/quarterly updates for senior management and board meetings.
• Review and develop internal policies to ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
• Provide legal advice on regulatory changes, support risk mitigation and assist with IRA matters.
• Lead, train and supervise the legal department staff, maintaining documentation and legal databases.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a recognized institution.
• Certified Public Secretary (CPS) with a current practising certificate.
• Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practising certificate and membership in the Law Society of Kenya.
• Minimum 3 years of legal practice in insurance or financial institutions, covering commercial law, litigation and conveyance.
• Higher Diploma in Law, Military Science or Security (required).
