Locum Medical Officer – Hospital Team Leader

About the role

The International Rescue Committee seeks a Locum Medical Officer to provide high‑quality health care to patients across all hospital wards, lead clinical teams and ensure that services are delivered safely and efficiently in a humanitarian setting.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure daily patient care across all hospital wards, including maternity, adult, paediatrics, stabilization and isolation units.
• Attend to medical and surgical emergencies and perform elective and emergency obstetric, gynaecological and surgical cases in theatre.
• Supervise and coordinate nursing and support staff, manage duty rosters, leave plans and disciplinary matters.
• Maintain accurate patient documentation, conduct daily ward rounds and lead death audits and quality‑improvement activities.
• Provide weekly updates on ward status, trends and resource needs, and ensure timely referrals to secondary and tertiary facilities.
• Participate in community feedback mechanisms, report on health needs and support safeguarding processes.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) and registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board.
• Minimum two years of experience working in a busy hospital setting.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage a multitasking environment.
• Strong leadership and team‑player attitude.

Required skills

• Computer literacy in MS Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint.
