Locum Medical Officer

About the role

The Locum Medical Officer will provide quality health care to all patients in the hospital and act as the team leader for nurses, laboratory, pharmacy and health post staff. This position is with the International Rescue Committee, a leading humanitarian organization operating in Kenya.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure all patients are attended to daily across all hospital wards.
• Supervise and manage staff in each ward, including nurses and support personnel.
• Conduct daily ward rounds in maternity, adult, paediatrics, stabilization centre and isolation wards.
• Attend to all medical and surgical emergencies and perform elective and emergency obstetric, gynaecological and surgical cases in theatre.
• Maintain accurate patient documentation and fill required medical‑legal forms (P3) and attend court sessions when needed.
• Run weekly special clinics such as SOPC, GOPC, HRC, MOPC and POPC.
• Provide weekly updates on ward status, trends, needs and mitigation measures.
• Coordinate referrals to secondary and tertiary care facilities promptly.
• Lead quality‑control activities, death audits and quality‑improvement action plans.
• Support continuous medical education (CME) for staff and act as Clinical Services Program lead when the Health Manager is absent.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) and registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board.
• Minimum two years of experience working in a busy hospital setting.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision in a challenging, multitasking environment.
• Flexibility, teamwork orientation and result‑driven attitude.
• Computer literacy in MS Windows, Word, Excel and PowerPoint is desired.
