Macroeconomics Scientist

About the role

World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is seeking a Macroeconomics Scientist to lead and support research on forest governance and natural resource management. The role is based in Nairobi, Kenya and involves developing high‑quality scientific outputs, managing multi‑country projects and securing funding.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific guidance ensuring research concepts and methods meet the highest standards.
• Collaborate with theme coordinators to define and implement research activities in emerging areas.
• Write, supervise and publish peer‑reviewed articles and other scientific communications.
• Lead capacity‑building initiatives and mentor junior scientists, students and staff.
• Represent CIFOR/ICRAF in national, regional and global forums on forest governance.
• Develop and maintain partnerships with stakeholders and pursue additional research funding.
• Plan, monitor and report on research activities, including budgeting and donor reporting.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., economics, natural resource management, social sciences).
• Proven record of peer‑reviewed publications and successful fundraising or donor proposal development.
• Experience managing budgets and multiple research projects across regions.
• Fluent written and spoken English; additional international language(s) an advantage.
• Demonstrated ability to work in multicultural, multidisciplinary teams and coordinate fieldwork in developing countries.
