Maternity Nurse

About the role

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a Maternity Nurse to deliver high‑quality maternal and neonatal care in its supported health facilities in Kenya. The role involves direct patient care from admission through discharge, working closely with doctors, clinical officers and other maternity staff.

Key responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care during antenatal visits, labor, delivery and post‑natal periods.
• Conduct daily clinical assessments, identify complications early and initiate appropriate interventions.
• Use a partograph to monitor labour progress and support mothers emotionally and physically.
• Perform normal vaginal deliveries, assist with assisted vaginal deliveries, and conduct neonatal resuscitation.
• Administer prescribed medications such as antibiotics, uterotonics and analgesics.
• Educate mothers on breastfeeding, perineal care and post‑partum family planning.
• Prepare and process patient referrals and accompany patients when needed.

Required profile

• Ability to deliver high‑quality maternal and perinatal nursing care.
• Strong clinical judgement for early identification of obstetric and neonatal complications.
• Effective communication and teamwork with multidisciplinary staff.
• Capability to assess discharge readiness for mothers and newborns.

Required skills

• Partograph usage for labour monitoring.
• Neonatal resuscitation techniques.
• Antenatal care monitoring and diagnostic test interpretation.
• Administration of antibiotics, uterotonics and analgesics.
• Conducting normal and assisted vaginal deliveries.
