About the role
The Media Consultant will strengthen UNICEF Kenya’s relationships with national and international journalists and editors, securing media coverage for children‑focused initiatives and advocacy priorities. The role also supports visibility for donors, programmes, and campaigns, and contributes to media engagement around the 2027 national elections and the Country Programme results for 2026‑2027.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and maintain contacts with prominent journalists and editors across print, broadcast and online media in Kenya.
- Secure coverage for UNICEF’s child rights initiatives and key advocacy messages.
- Promote visibility of major donors, programmes and campaigns through media channels.
- Lead media engagement activities linked to the 2027 national elections.
- Facilitate reporting on Country Programme achievements for 2026‑2027.
Required profile
- Master’s degree in Journalism, Mass Media, Communications, Development Studies or a related field.
- Minimum 8 years of professional experience in communication, media relations or journalism, preferably with a child‑rights organization.
- Fluent oral and written English and Kiswahili.
- Proven ability to work in a multicultural environment and collaborate with UNICEF programme teams.
Required skills
- Experience developing media communication strategies.
- Strong writing skills for press releases, articles and stories for traditional and digital media.
- Ability to research, analyse, evaluate and synthesize information.
- Extensive media contacts and knowledge of current communication research practices.
