Media Consultant – National (Remote + Travel)

About the role
UNICEF is seeking a National Media Consultant to strengthen relationships with journalists and editors across Kenya. The role focuses on securing media coverage for UNICEF’s child‑rights initiatives, donor visibility, and advocacy priorities, especially around the 2027 national elections and programme results.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and implement media communication strategies to promote UNICEF’s programmes and advocacy messages.
- Engage national and international media outlets to obtain coverage on children’s issues and UNICEF activities.
- Coordinate press releases, articles, and story pitches for print, broadcast, and online platforms.
- Ensure visibility for key donors, programmes, and campaigns through targeted media outreach.
- Support media engagement related to the 2027 election cycle and reporting on programme outcomes for 2026‑2027.
Required profile
- Master’s degree in Journalism, Mass Media, Communications, Development Studies or related field.
- Minimum 8 years of professional experience in communication, print, broadcast or digital media, preferably covering children’s issues for a child‑rights organization.
- Fluent in English and Kiswahili, both written and spoken.
- Proven ability to work in multicultural environments and collaborate with diverse teams.
Required skills
- Experience developing media communication strategies.
- Excellent writing skills for press releases, articles and stories.
- Strong research, analysis and synthesis capabilities.
- Extensive media contacts and knowledge of current communication practices.
