Mercury Consultant – Oral Health Expert

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) seeks an international consultant to lead the development of two Medium‑Sized Project (MSP) proposals aimed at phasing out dental amalgam use. The work will support target countries in strengthening regulatory frameworks, health‑insurance policies, education initiatives, and integrated waste‑management systems for mercury and plastics within oral health care.

Key responsibilities

• Develop two MSPs and associated annexes for the Global Environment Facility (GEF) submission, targeting the first half of 2027.
• Analyse and recommend improvements to national regulatory and enforcement mechanisms related to dental amalgam.
• Design health‑insurance and non‑mercury education strategies to promote safer oral‑health practices.
• Strengthen country capacities for environmentally sound management of chemicals and waste in the oral‑health sector.
• Coordinate with UNEP’s GEF Chemicals and Green Chemistry Unit and provide technical input for project supervision and reporting.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in environmental science, public health, dentistry, or a related field.
• Proven experience in developing GEF‑funded projects or similar international environmental initiatives.
• Deep understanding of dental amalgam phase‑out policies, mercury regulations, and waste‑management practices.
• Strong background in policy analysis, regulatory affairs, and capacity‑building for health‑sector stakeholders.
