Midwife (Managed by Nairobi)

About the role

MSF is recruiting a midwife managed by its Nairobi office. Midwives are a vital part of most project teams, from visiting expectant mothers in remote areas to carrying out antenatal checks and training birth attendants in busy maternity departments. The role often combines work in health centres with community outreach, in contexts such as natural disasters, conflict or poverty-affected communities.

Key responsibilities

• Pre- and post-delivery care and deliveries, often complicated
• Care of survivors of sexual violence
• Setting up maternity departments in new health centres or hospitals
• Working with community birth attendants to ensure safe community birthing practices
• Running awareness programmes in the community
• Training local midwives
• On-call care, often 24 hours

Required profile

• Valid registration
• Two years' post-qualification experience
• Experience supervising, managing and training others
• Experience of obstetric emergencies, complicated deliveries, termination of pregnancy and sexual violence
• Over three months' experience in a low-resource setting
• Willingness to work in unstable areas and to be regularly on call
• Available for six to nine months
• Fluency in English
• Adaptable, able to work in a multicultural team and to manage stress

Required skills

• Tropical nursing diploma
• Knowledge of STDs, HIV/AIDS and family planning
• Community midwifery experience
• Good level of French or Arabic
