Public Information Specialist 1 – NY HELPS Program

About the role

The Public Information Specialist 1 supports NYSTRS by developing and executing communication strategies that inform members, employers, and the public about retirement benefits and system updates. Working under the Assistant Director of Communications & Outreach, the specialist creates clear, engaging content across multiple channels.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in designing and implementing a multi‑faceted communications plan for NYSTRS stakeholders.
• Write and edit content for teachers, retired members, employers, and the general public.
• Produce digital assets, newsletters, web copy, and other collateral to promote system news and retirement‑planning information.
• Collaborate with internal teams to ensure consistent messaging and brand alignment.
• Research best practices in public communications and apply them to improve outreach effectiveness.

Required profile

• Six years of experience in public or governmental relations, writing, or content production.
• Superior writing, editing, and communication abilities.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects.
• Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to exceptional customer service.

Required skills

• Experience with web content management systems.
