Regional Safety & Security Director

About the role

The Regional Safety & Security Director leads the physical safety and security program for staff, volunteers and partners across The Nature Conservancy’s Africa and Europe regions. Based in Nairobi, the role works both independently and with the global Safety Team to set standards, provide technical guidance and ensure compliance with local regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain emergency management plans and safety/security protocols for regional projects.
• Coordinate training programs, drills and safety committees to raise awareness and preparedness.
• Conduct safety and security reviews, audits and investigations, including root‑cause analysis of incidents.
• Maintain regional compliance with country workplace health and safety legislation and TNC policies.
• Manage the Safety Incident Reporting Tool (SIRT) and ensure timely reporting, escalation and investigation of hazards.
• Provide input on crisis response and support the formation of regional safety liaisons.

Required profile

• BA/BS degree with at least 7 years of experience in safety, security or emergency management.
• Demonstrated experience working on safety and security issues in Africa and Europe.
• Proven ability to lead complex, cross‑regional projects and meet deadlines.
• Strong written and spoken communication skills in English.
• Experience in conservation, environmental or sustainability sectors is a plus.

Required skills

• Safety and security audits, reviews and investigations.
• First Aid Officer and Remote First Aid training.
• Operation and maintenance of small boats, high‑level boating certifications.
• Dive and boat training curriculum design.
• Use of safety incident reporting tools (e.g., SIRT).
