Scientist – Forest Law Enforcement

About the role

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is seeking a Scientist to lead forest law enforcement research in Kenya. The role combines scientific rigour with policy relevance, supporting the Centre’s mission to promote sustainable forest governance across Africa.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific guidance to ensure research concepts and methods meet the highest standards.
• Collaborate with theme coordinators to define and implement emerging research activities.
• Write, supervise, and disseminate peer‑reviewed publications and other scientific communications.
• Lead capacity‑building initiatives and mentor junior scientists, students, and staff.
• Represent ICRAF in national, regional, and global forums on forest governance.
• Develop and maintain constructive partnerships with stakeholders.
• Identify and secure additional research funding; lead proposal development and donor reporting.
• Plan, monitor, and manage research activities, including budgeting and financial oversight.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., forestry, natural resource management, social sciences).
• Experience in collaborative natural‑resource management or social‑science research.
• Strong record of peer‑reviewed publications.
• Demonstrated success in budget management and fundraising for research projects.
• Fluent spoken and written English; additional international language(s) an advantage.
• Proven ability to work with multiple partners and multidisciplinary teams in developing‑country contexts.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
