SDG Localization Expert Consultant

About the role

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN‑Habitat) is seeking a consultant to support its SDG Cities and Multilevel Governance Team in Nairobi. The role will provide technical advice, develop tools and methodologies, and contribute to the localisation of the Sustainable Development Goals at city and national levels.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical advisory on urban governance, policy coherence and SDG‑aligned planning, drawing on Local2030 and SDG Cities frameworks.
• Develop, test and implement tools, methodologies and training materials for SDG Cities, National SDG Localization Frameworks and Voluntary Local Reviews.
• Conduct quality assurance reviews of project documents, data sheets, strategies and proposals to ensure methodological consistency with UN‑Habitat standards.
• Design and deliver capacity‑building programmes for local governments, regional and country offices, with attention to inclusive participation of youth, women and marginalized groups.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in information management, project management, international development or related field, or a first‑level degree with at least two years relevant experience.
• Minimum two years of experience in sustainable development, urban governance, local development or project management, preferably with UN‑Habitat or similar multilateral organisations.
• Demonstrated experience in developing knowledge products, tools or methodologies for SDG localisation or urban planning.

Required skills

• Technical advisory on urban governance and SDG policy integration.
• Tool and methodology development for SDG data, planning and investment tracking.
• Quality assurance and substantive review of development documents.
