Senior Backend Engineer – Java/Spring Boot (Malaysia/China)

About the role

Standard Chartered is looking for a technically strong Senior Backend Engineer to lead the design, development, and optimisation of high‑performance Java/Spring Boot micro‑service applications. The role can be based in Malaysia or China and will involve shaping backend design principles, coding standards and architectural patterns aligned with the bank’s long‑term technology vision.

Key responsibilities

• Establish and enforce backend design principles, coding standards, API standards and architectural patterns.
• Architect scalable, secure, performance‑first backend services using Java, Spring Boot, micro‑services, REST APIs, event‑driven integration, caching and database optimisation.
• Lead adoption of modern backend engineering practices and cloud‑ready deployment patterns.
• Mentor and groom engineering teams on Agile delivery, secure coding, observability and engineering excellence.
• Drive cross‑team architecture decisions across backend, frontend, data, integration and infrastructure layers.
• Analyse complex requirements, break them into user stories and support the full SDLC from development to release.

Required profile

• Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot issues across application, integration, database and infrastructure layers.
• Proven leadership experience, capable of guiding teams and sharing domain expertise.
• Ability to translate complex requirements into clear, actionable tasks.
• Experience working in an Agile environment and championing SDLC best practices.
