Senior Finance Officer – Nairobi, Kenya

About the role

The Senior Finance Officer is responsible for daily expenditure, management and maintenance of CWS Africa’s financial records, ensuring compliance with internal policies, US Government funding rules and international accounting standards. The role works closely with finance, HR, general services and program teams to support accurate financial operations across the organization.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with GAAP, IFRS, OMB circulars and US Government fund requirements, and coordinate external audit planning and response.
• Oversee payment processes, supplier invoice posting, credit‑card reconciliation, VAT and withholding tax filings, and maintain accurate ERP records.
• Monitor accounts aging, cash‑flow forecasting, petty‑cash management and coordinate disbursements in both shillings and dollars.
• Build positive relationships with internal staff, external vendors, auditors and banks, and provide support to other country offices.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years progressive finance/accounting experience, at least 3 years in an INGO or donor‑funded environment.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration and a professional qualification (CPA, ACCA, CIMA).
• Strong organizational, time‑management and analytical abilities, with the capacity to work independently under pressure.

Required skills

• Advanced Excel (including complex formulas and data analysis).
• Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central or comparable ERP system.
• Knowledge of GAAP, IFRS, fund and accrual accounting principles.
• Experience with VAT, withholding tax filing and reconciliation.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
