Tax Accountant – Contract (Nairobi)

About the role

Our client, a leading oil and gas company in Kenya, is seeking a Tax Accountant on a contract basis in Nairobi. The role will manage tax payments, act as a liaison with the Revenue Authority and other statutory bodies, and ensure full compliance with Kenyan tax regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and file tax returns on time, including VAT, Withholding Tax, Reverse VAT and other statutory returns.
• Identify weaknesses in current tax processes and implement solutions to improve accuracy and efficiency.
• Verify tax rates, compute accurate tax liabilities and process payment requests.
• Audit VAT refunds, certify them and follow up for cash refunds or set‑off against other tax liabilities.
• Ensure timely remittance of import and purchase taxes and reconcile payments to avoid over‑ or under‑payment.
• Develop solutions for audit issues raised by revenue authorities and deliver in‑house tax training.
• Review and advise on exemptions, remissions, offsets and the tax implications of transactions.
• Liaise with Revenue Authorities and external auditors on tax matters.
• Prepare and reconcile tax schedules and distribute them to relevant departments.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Business or Finance.
• Professional accounting qualification such as CPA or ACCA.
• Strong analytical and communication abilities.
• Thorough knowledge of Kenyan tax regulations (VAT, Income Tax, Customs).
• Experience using SAP for tax accounting.
