Tax Accountant

About the role

A leading company in the Oil and Gas sector, recruited through Stratostaff East Africa, is looking for a Tax Accountant based in Nairobi. The role handles tax payments (income tax and customs duties), maintains good relations with external service providers and government bodies, acts as a liaison with the Revenue Authority and other statutory bodies, and performs house accounting for all tax payments.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and file VAT, withholding tax, reverse VAT and other statutory returns on time and accurately with the Kenya Revenue Authority.
• Identify weaknesses in current tax processes and propose solutions so that the right outputs are delivered.
• Verify rates applied, payment requests and memos to ensure accurate tax computations.
• Certify and follow up on VAT refund audits, and reconcile taxes on imports and purchases to avoid over- or under-payment.
• Ensure taxes paid in advance are fully accounted for and reconciled.
• Develop solutions to audit issues raised by the Revenue Authority and statutory bodies, including in-house tax training to support compliance and tax planning.
• Review and advise on exemptions, remissions and offsets, and advise on the tax implications of transactions.
• Liaise with the Revenue Authority and external auditors on tax matters, and prepare and reconcile tax schedules for the relevant departments.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Business or Finance.
• Professional accounting qualifications such as CPA or ACCA.
• Good analytical and communication skills.

Required skills

• Thorough knowledge of Kenyan tax regulations and laws (VAT, income tax, customs).
• Knowledge of SAP.
