About the role

The Technical Expert will support regional efforts to promote energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Africa’s maritime sector, working under the MTCC Africa Head and Project Director and collaborating with national and regional maritime stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and implement regional GHG emissions inventory and reporting systems in line with IMO guidelines.
  • Support data collection, reporting and inventory management for GHG and energy data from African ports and shipping operators.
  • Provide technical guidance on compliance with IMO regulations, including MARPOL Annex VI, EEXI, CII and DCS.
  • Collaborate with port authorities, flag states and operators to establish Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) frameworks.
  • Apply modelling tools to assess policy, technological and regulatory changes for sustainable shipping.
  • Promote awareness and build capacity through workshops, training and knowledge‑sharing forums.
  • Strengthen partnerships with IMO, regional centres, NGOs and industry stakeholders.
  • Conduct research on emissions‑reduction technologies and best practices for African ports and shipping.

Required profile

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering, Maritime discipline or related engineering field with focus on Energy/Climate Policy.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in environmental management, marine engineering or maritime operations, preferably in GHG emissions reduction or energy efficiency.

Required skills

  • Marine engineering and maritime regulatory knowledge.
  • GHG emissions inventory and reporting.
  • Compliance with IMO regulations (MARPOL Annex VI, EEXI, CII, DCS).
  • Use of modelling tools for policy and technology assessment.

What we offer

  • Basic salary of KSh 96,006 per month (scale up to KSh 147,805).
  • House allowance of KSh 47,915 per month and other allowances commensurate with the position.
