About the role

The Trial Attorney in the FTCA Section litigates personal injury, wrongful death, and property damage claims arising from the actions of federal employees. This position handles high‑profile, complex cases of national significance and provides legal guidance to United States Attorneys' Offices and federal agencies.

Key responsibilities

• Litigate FTCA suits involving personal injury, wrongful death, and property damage.
• Provide guidance on complex legal issues to USAOs and federal agencies.
• Recommend settlement authorizations and prepare appeal recommendations for adverse judgments.
• Handle law‑enforcement related matters, immigration custody claims, and protests‑related litigation.
• Defend the United States in catastrophic disaster litigation and complex medical‑malpractice cases.
• Review draft legislation affecting the public fisc and advise on strategic legal approaches.
• Adjust and settle administrative claims for the DOJ and other federal agencies, exceeding delegated settlement authority.
• Make settlement recommendations to the Assistant Attorney General and Associate Attorney General.

Required profile

• U.S. citizen or national.
• Successful completion of a background investigation, including drug testing.
• Male applicants born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with the Selective Service or qualify for exemption.
• May be required to complete a two‑year trial period.
• Potential need for a security clearance depending on assignment.
