About the role
The International Rescue Committee is seeking a dedicated Volunteer Community Health Assistant (CHA) to support primary healthcare delivery at the community level. The CHA will work closely with households, health facilities and local partners to promote health, prevent disease and strengthen community health systems.
Key responsibilities
- Provide basic health services such as immunization, health education, and management of common illnesses like diarrhea and malaria.
- Support maternal and child health by promoting antenatal/postnatal care and breastfeeding.
- Educate communities on hygiene, sanitation, nutrition and water safety.
- Conduct household visits for health education, surveillance and disease prevention.
- Facilitate community dialogue days, action days and health campaigns.
- Promote uptake of preventive services including family planning and safe water use.
- Work with Community Health Committees, Community Health Promoters and local stakeholders to implement health strategies.
- Strengthen community participation, support referrals and collaborate with local leaders, NGOs and Ministry of Health structures.
- Oversee and mentor Community Health Promoters, organize training and ensure regular supervision.
- Maintain accurate records of services delivered and ensure timely reporting.
Required profile
- Commitment to volunteer service and improving community health.
- Ability to conduct household visits and deliver health education.
- Experience or strong interest in supervising community health promoters.
- Effective communication and collaboration with local leaders, NGOs and health authorities.
