Assistant Legal Advisor – Kenya

About the role

The Assistant Legal Advisor (ALA) supports HTI’s anti‑trafficking initiatives within Kenya’s criminal justice system, working closely with the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the C‑TIP Secretariat and NGOs. The role reports to the Country Director – Kenya and is based in Nairobi.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal and policy guidance on Kenyan statutory, regulatory and customary law for program activities.
• Interpret legislative developments and translate them into actionable advice for senior staff.
• Coordinate meetings and build partnerships with government and civil‑society stakeholders.
• Develop and maintain data collection processes, support MERL activities and ensure confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Conduct legal research on human‑trafficking prosecutions, monitor policy changes and contribute to reporting and proposal development.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) and admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
• Extensive experience working inside Kenya’s criminal justice system, including ODPP or DCI.
• 5+ years of experience with Kenyan statutory, regulatory and customary legal frameworks, especially the Counter‑Trafficking in Persons Act.
• Proven ability to coordinate senior‑level engagements and build trust‑based relationships across diverse stakeholders.

Required skills

• Strong written and oral communication in English and Kiswahili.
• Ability to conduct legal research, analyze policy, and produce high‑quality reports.
• Experience in program design, capacity building and data quality assurance.
