Attorney Advisor – Indian Law

About the role

The Office of Tribal Justice is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as an Attorney Advisor on Indian matters. The role provides legal counsel to the Director and Deputy Director, supporting policy development, litigation coordination, and tribal liaison activities.

Key responsibilities

• Advise senior OTJ leadership on significant federal Indian law issues and assist in policy and legislative development.
• Review and coordinate legal actions submitted by divisions that require OTJ approval.
• Conduct legal research on assigned questions and prepare reports, memoranda, and recommendations.
• Collaborate with DOJ attorneys, other federal agencies, and interested parties to ensure compliance with statutory, regulatory, and policy requirements.
• Maintain liaison with federally recognized tribes and work with tribal, state, and local officials, as well as public interest groups.
• Develop, coordinate, and execute special projects as assigned by the Director or Deputy Director.

Required profile

• U.S. citizen or national able to obtain a secret‑level security clearance.
• J.D. degree and active bar membership in any U.S. jurisdiction or the District of Columbia.
• At least two years of post‑J.D. experience, including experience with federal Indian law.
• Willingness to complete a pre‑employment security investigation, background check, and possible one‑year probationary period.
