Back End Developer (1 Year Fixed Term)

About the role

Stratostaff East Africa is recruiting a Back End Developer for a 1-year fixed-term position in Nairobi. The role covers designing, developing, testing, deploying and maintaining software applications that support business and operational objectives, including high-volume, mission-critical systems built on distributed architectures and modern cloud-based platforms. It involves close collaboration with cross-functional teams and a strong focus on quality, performance and maintainability.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with stakeholders to understand requirements and take part in planning and design activities.
• Take part in system design and architecture, including application structure, components and integrations.
• Develop, test and maintain clean, efficient and reliable code aligned with approved designs and coding standards.
• Implement application features and services, including microservices-based architectures, within agreed timelines.
• Integrate components, resolve dependencies and support end-to-end delivery with other developers.
• Write unit and system tests, debug defects and create technical documentation on codebases, APIs, architecture and standards.
• Take part in code reviews, provide ongoing support and maintenance, and apply secure development practices.
• Communicate progress, risks and status updates to project teams and stakeholders.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum of five years of professional experience in full-stack software development.
• Strong understanding of data structures and algorithms.
• Professional certifications in Java, DevOps or cloud technologies are an added advantage.

Required skills

• Backend services with Java 1.8+, Spring Framework, Spring Boot, Apache Camel, REST and SOAP APIs, and microservices.
• Front-end with JavaScript and React or Angular.
• Relational and NoSQL databases using SQL and NoSQL.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes or OpenShift, Linux command line, and CI/CD tools such as Git, Jenkins or Azure DevOps.
