Casual Custodian – Flexible School Cleaning

About the role

The Halifax Regional Centre for Education is seeking reliable individuals to join its casual custodian list. You will help keep school buildings clean, sanitary and welcoming while working on short‑term assignments across the district.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine cleaning of classrooms, hallways, restrooms and other school facilities.
• Maintain a tidy and safe environment by following established health and safety procedures.
• Carry out minor maintenance tasks such as light bulb replacement, minor repairs and reporting larger issues.
• Respond promptly to daily or weekly assignment calls and travel to designated schools.
• Document work performed and communicate any concerns to the Operations Services Department.

Required profile

• Ability to work effectively within a team and communicate with staff, students and external service providers.
• Reliable personal transportation to travel between school sites.
• Willingness to undergo a recent criminal records check with vulnerable sector and child abuse registry searches.
• Understanding of and adherence to Centre policies, confidentiality standards and human‑rights principles.
• Flexibility to work evening shifts (typically 4 pm – midnight) on a short‑term basis.

Required skills

• Knowledge of building cleaning practices and procedures.
• Ability to perform minor maintenance tasks safely.
• Basic organizational and written communication skills for reporting and coordination.
