Communications & Design Intern

About the role

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN‑Habitat) is seeking a Communications & Design Intern for its Cities Investment Facility (CIF) in Nairobi. This six‑month, on‑site internship offers hands‑on experience in marketing, communications, and graphic design supporting sustainable urban development initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in designing and implementing CIF’s overall marketing strategy.
• Draft, format, and edit social‑media content for the editorial calendar.
• Conduct research on thematic issues and support the planning and production of marketing campaigns across CIF channels.
• Contribute to internal UN‑Habitat publications and prepare public‑facing documents, reports, and strategies in English.
• Conceptualise visuals, create graphs, infographics and graphics based on team ideas.
• Design marketing collateral such as newsletters, brochure covers, posters, and social cards following brand guidelines.
• Maintain brand consistency across all materials, design electronic invitations and event collateral.
• Support social‑media campaigns, coordinate short‑form video production, and conduct basic audience research to inform design work.

Required profile

• Enrolled in a graduate programme, in the final year of a bachelor’s programme, or already holds a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD degree.
• Strong interest in urban development, sustainability and international cooperation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams and external partners.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
