Data Engineer

About the role

The Data Engineer will design, develop and optimise scalable data infrastructure to support analytics, business intelligence and AI/ML workloads. You will work closely with data scientists and business partners to ensure high‑quality, compliant data for self‑service platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Design and optimise ETL/ELT pipelines and data warehouses (e.g., ClickHouse) for performance, scalability and cost‑efficiency.
• Implement data quality frameworks (dbt tests, Great Expectations) with automated validation, anomaly detection and alerts to achieve 99.99% data accuracy.
• Enforce data masking and compliance with Kenya’s Data Protection Act and manage role‑based access control.
• Collaborate with senior data scientists to build pipelines for AI‑led self‑service platforms, generative AI, LLMs and predictive models.
• Develop data cataloguing, lineage and monitoring dashboards (Grafana) to ensure visibility, security and optimal resource utilisation.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering or related field.
• 2–5 years of professional data engineering experience with a proven track record of building scalable pipelines.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work with cross‑functional teams.
• Adaptability to local business contexts in Kenya, Uganda or Côte d’Ivoire and awareness of regional data regulations.
