Data Engineer

About the role

Co-operative Bank is hiring a full-time, on-site Data Engineer in Nairobi. The role covers designing and maintaining data pipelines, managing databases, ensuring data quality and supporting analytics and reporting to improve business decisions. The deadline to apply is 09/11/2026.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, test and maintain batch, streaming and real-time data pipelines that feed the Bank's data and AI platforms.
• Build reusable data products and feature sets for business intelligence, analytics and AI.
• Implement data quality controls, reconciliation, metadata, lineage and monitoring.
• Apply data security, privacy, access controls, encryption and retention in line with the Data Protection Act, 2019 and Bank policy.
• Optimise pipelines for performance, reliability, scalability and cost, with recovery and auditability.
• Work with business data owners to turn requirements into fit-for-purpose datasets.
• Integrate automated testing, source control and CI/CD into data workflows.
• Monitor production pipelines, troubleshoot incidents and keep technical documentation.
• Develop pipelines for unstructured data (documents, text, voice) to support generative AI and vector databases.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics or a related field.
• At least 4 years of experience in data engineering, ETL/ELT, database engineering or big-data implementation.
• Hands-on experience building production data pipelines and analytical datasets.
• Professional certification in data engineering, cloud data platforms, databases or analytics is an added advantage.
• Experience in banking, financial services or a regulated data environment is an added advantage.

Required skills

• Strong proficiency in SQL and Python, Scala or comparable languages.
• ETL/ELT development and data pipeline maintenance.
