Data Scientist (AI-Native) – Growth & Credit

About the role

Umba is seeking a Data Scientist who will own the core models that drive profitable growth and credit underwriting. Working in an AI‑native environment, you will design, build, and continuously improve scoring systems that determine customer acquisition and loan terms.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, deploy, and iterate credit scoring models using bank statements, payment history, CRB data, and in‑app behavioural signals.
• Design automated underwriting flows for both digitally acquired and sales‑sourced customers.
• Build pipelines for automatic model retraining as new repayment data becomes available.
• Optimize marketing spend by creating models for ad targeting, funnel conversion, channel attribution and CAC/LTV experiments.
• Define problem specifications for AI agents, review AI‑generated code, and set production quality standards.
• Collaborate with Engineering, Product, and Sales to ship models that impact lending decisions from day one.

Required profile

• Strong analytical mindset with experience in end‑to‑end data science projects.
• Ability to work independently in a fast‑paced, in‑office environment.
• Excellent communication skills to partner with cross‑functional teams.

Required skills

• Machine learning model development and evaluation.
• Experience with LLM‑based tools such as Claude Code and Codex.
• Building and maintaining data pipelines for model retraining.
• Working knowledge of credit scoring, underwriting, and marketing attribution.
