Data Scientist – Fraud Detection

About the role

We are seeking a Data Scientist to lead the fight against fraud at Moniepoint, Africa’s fastest‑growing fintech. You will design, prototype and ship machine‑learning models and experiments that protect millions of customers and merchants, working closely with engineering, product and fraud operations.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, evaluate and productionise machine‑learning models for fraud detection, and manage their monitoring and retraining.
• Design and run experiments to assess the impact of fraud interventions, balancing customer experience with loss reduction.
• Quantify fraud typologies across product lines to guide prioritisation and investment.
• Build and maintain anomaly‑detection systems to surface emerging fraud vectors.
• Collaborate with fraud operations, engineers, product managers and analysts to translate model outputs into real‑world mitigations.

Required profile

• Degree in a quantitative discipline (Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science or similar).
• 3+ years of experience in data science, decision science or risk analytics, preferably in fraud, payments or financial crime.
• Hands‑on experience deploying machine‑learning models in production.
• Strong foundation in statistical inference, experimentation and feature engineering.
• Ability to work in fast‑paced, cross‑functional teams with high ownership.
