Director of Legal & Privacy (Attorney)

About the role

Sovrn is seeking a Director of Legal & Privacy to lead its legal function. Reporting to the CFO, you will shape legal strategy, manage risk, and ensure compliance across commercial contracts, data protection, intellectual property, and dispute matters.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review, negotiate and manage a high volume of commercial agreements with publishers, advertisers, vendors, partners and platforms.
• Develop and maintain contract templates, negotiation playbooks and approval workflows.
• Oversee Sovrn’s privacy program, ensuring compliance with GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, U.S. state privacy laws and ad‑tech frameworks such as IAB TCF and GPP.
• Advise product and engineering teams on new privacy requirements and data processing agreements.
• Implement and manage core legal infrastructure, including contract lifecycle management and document management systems.
• Manage relationships with external counsel and the outside privacy contractor, controlling scope and spend.
• Maintain the company’s IP portfolio (trademarks, patents, trade secrets) in coordination with outside counsel.
• Support dispute resolution, pre‑litigation matters and corporate transactions.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading a legal function in a technology‑focused organization.
• Deep knowledge of privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA) and ad‑tech compliance frameworks.
• Strong background in commercial contracting, IP management and dispute handling.
• Ability to work cross‑functionally with sales, product, engineering and finance teams.
