Fabric Worker – Naval Shipyard (Temporary Services)

About the role

The Fabric Worker will join the Temporary Services Shop within the Production Resources Department of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. This position supports the design, fabrication, inspection, installation, removal, and maintenance of both nuclear and non‑nuclear containment structures. The role requires precise use of calibrated trade‑specific instruments and the ability to work safely in hazardous environments.

Key responsibilities

• Operate sensitive, calibrated precision instruments and equipment.
• Identify staging and scaffolding requirements to ensure safe enclosure work.
• Design, fabricate, inspect, install, remove, and maintain containment enclosures.
• Perform journeyman‑level fabrication tasks for nuclear and non‑nuclear projects.
• Adhere to safety protocols, wear required personal protective equipment, and participate in medical surveillance programs.
• Travel to CONUS and OCONUS sites as needed, including remote or isolated locations.
• Work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to meet mission requirements.

Required profile

• U.S. citizenship and eligibility for federal employment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain an interim or final security clearance.
• Willingness to undergo a pre‑appointment physical examination and medical surveillance.
• Capability to work in environments with fumes, dust, heat, radiation, and chemicals.
• Readiness to travel on military or commercial aircraft for extended periods.
• Flexibility to work uncommon tours, overtime, and night differentials.
