General Attorney (RECA)

About the role

The RECA Program administers compensation claims for individuals affected by radiation exposure linked to uranium mining, milling, transport, or atmospheric nuclear testing. As a General Attorney, you will represent the Attorney General’s interests throughout the claims process, from investigation to appeal, ensuring fair restitution for claimants.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct legal research and analysis on statutes, rules, and regulations related to the RECA Program.
• Review complex administrative records and develop additional evidence to support entitlement determinations.
• Collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to gather relevant evidence.
• Evaluate claims for fraud and litigation risk, providing entitlement recommendations.
• Draft correspondence, memoranda, legal pleadings, and other documents related to claims.
• Work closely with DOJ trial attorneys on matters that proceed to court.
• Participate in meetings with opposing counsel, collaborating agencies, and stakeholders.

Required profile

• U.S. citizen or national.
• Pass a background investigation, including drug testing.
• Male applicants born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with the Selective Service or qualify for exemption.
• May be required to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with SCI eligibility.
• Potential 2‑year trial period as stipulated by the department.
