Instrumentation and Control Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a motivated Instrumentation & Control Engineer to join Octavia Carbon’s Research & Development team. You will design, develop, integrate and maintain the instrumentation, control systems and data‑acquisition platforms that power our Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology.

Key responsibilities

• Specify, procure, install and commission instrumentation for experimental and pilot‑scale DAC systems.
• Develop calibration procedures, troubleshoot instrument failures and ensure long‑term measurement accuracy.
• Design and implement machine control systems, including process‑control strategies and safety interlocks.
• Program embedded controllers and industrial automation hardware, commission new equipment and tune control performance.
• Develop firmware for low‑level microcontrollers and embedded‑Linux MPU’s, and create embedded electronics for data acquisition.
• Integrate sensors and actuators using industry‑standard protocols (CAN bus, Modbus RTU/TCP, EtherCAT, Ethernet, MQTT, UART, SPI, I²C).
• Debug hardware, firmware and communication issues and build reliable data‑logging and remote‑diagnostics tools.
• Produce electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control‑panel designs and support electrical installation in line with safety standards.

Required profile

• Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics or a related field.
• Proven experience designing and commissioning instrumentation and control systems for laboratory or pilot‑scale projects.
• Ability to work cross‑functionally with Process, Mechanical and Materials engineering teams.
• Strong problem‑solving mindset and attention to measurement reliability.

Required skills

• Industrial communication protocols: CAN bus, Modbus RTU/TCP, EtherCAT, Ethernet, MQTT, UART, SPI, I²C.
• Embedded controller programming and firmware development for microcontrollers and embedded‑Linux platforms.
• SCADA integration and visualization tools.
• Design of electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and control panels.
• Calibration, fault detection, alarm handling and safety‑interlock design.
