About the role
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Legal Officer (P3) to join its Industry and Economy Division, specifically within the Plastics Unit in Nairobi. The incumbent will support UNEP’s mandate to integrate environmental law into policies that promote sustainable consumption, production, and circular economy practices.
Key responsibilities
- Provide legal analysis and advice on environmental legislation, regulations, and international agreements relevant to plastics and chemicals.
- Draft, review, and negotiate legal documents, contracts, and policy instruments supporting UNEP’s programmes.
- Collaborate with the Law Division, industry stakeholders, and government agencies to develop coherent legal frameworks.
- Monitor and report on developments in environmental law, especially those affecting the plastics sector.
- Support the preparation of guidelines, technical notes, and capacity‑building materials for member states.
Required profile
- Advanced university degree in Law (LL.M. or equivalent) with a focus on environmental or international law.
- At least five years of professional experience in environmental law, policy development, or related fields.
- Demonstrated ability to work in multicultural, multi‑stakeholder environments.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of another UN language is an asset.
