Part-Time ECDIS Trainer

About the role

Mount Kenya University is seeking a part‑time trainer to deliver both theoretical and practical instruction on Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), ARPA and RADAR to maritime students. The role involves preparing lesson materials, conducting simulator sessions and guiding learners through certification requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Teach theoretical concepts and hands‑on operation of ECDIS, ARPA and RADAR systems.
• Run simulator‑based training and real‑time scenario exercises.
• Develop lesson plans, instructional resources and assessments aligned with IMO STCW and model courses.
• Mentor students on integrating electronic navigation tools with bridge operations and safety procedures.
• Evaluate student performance, provide feedback and maintain accurate attendance and assessment records.
• Update training modules to reflect current technologies and regulatory changes.
• Collaborate with other trainers and technical staff to maintain and upgrade simulator equipment.
• Participate in faculty meetings, workshops and professional development activities.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Nautical Science, Marine Navigation or a related field.
• Certificate of Competency as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (STCW II/1) or higher.
• Valid ECDIS certification with experience using ARPA and RADAR.
• Minimum 2–3 years sea service; prior teaching or training experience in a maritime institution is desirable.
