External Examiner – Medical School

About the role

Mount Kenya University is seeking an External Examiner for its Medical School. The role involves independent moderation of examinations, assessment of academic standards, and providing quality assurance reports. It is a full‑time, on‑site position reporting to the university’s academic board.

Key responsibilities

• Moderate examination papers and marking schemes before they are administered.
• Review and moderate marked scripts, projects, dissertations, theses and other assessments.
• Evaluate programme and assessment standards against national and international benchmarks.
• Prepare independent reports on the quality and standards of academic programmes.
• Advise on curriculum development, assessment practices and academic quality enhancement.
• Attend examination boards and academic meetings when invited.
• Submit annual reports on the conduct and standards of examinations and academic programmes.

Required profile

• Earned PhD in a relevant discipline from a recognised academic institution.
• Current rank of Senior Lecturer or equivalent at a recognised university.
• Strong record of teaching, research and academic supervision.
• Experience in examination moderation, curriculum development and quality assurance.
• Registration with the relevant professional body where applicable.
• Not a current employee of Mount Kenya University.
