Part-Time Trainer in Nautical Science

About the role

Mount Kenya University is seeking a part‑time trainer to deliver nautical science courses to cadets. The role combines classroom instruction with hands‑on bridge simulation, ensuring students meet international maritime standards.

Key responsibilities

• Teach core subjects such as navigation, ship stability, meteorology, cargo handling and maritime law.
• Conduct practical sessions using bridge simulators, chart work and voyage planning tools.
• Develop lesson plans, instructional materials and assessments aligned with IMO STCW standards.
• Mentor cadets, monitor their progress and provide feedback for certification exams.
• Maintain accurate records of attendance, performance and assessment results.
• Collaborate with fellow trainers, academic staff and industry partners to continuously improve the curriculum.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Nautical Science, Marine Navigation or a related field.
• Certificate of Competency (CoC) as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (STCW II/1), Master Mariner or Chief Mate (STCW II/2).
• Minimum 2‑3 years of sea service.
• Prior teaching or training experience in a maritime institution is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with IMO Model Courses and STCW requirements.
