Personnel Security Specialist

About the role

The Personnel Security Specialist provides direct technical support and guidance on personnel suitability and security matters within the USDA Agricultural Research Service Human Resources Division. This role ensures that background investigations, suitability determinations, and security processes are performed accurately and in compliance with federal regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Receive and process background investigation forms for applicants and incumbents.
• Determine eligibility and suitability for federal positions based on investigation results.
• Update personnel vetting information in automated HR systems.
• Manage and maintain ongoing suitability and personnel security activities.
• Provide guidance and advice on security and suitability issues to HR staff and managers.
• Prepare summaries and responses to investigative security inquiries.

Required profile

• U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a security clearance.
• Specialized experience at the GS‑09 or GS‑11 level as described, including background investigation processing and security guidance.
• Education: Master's degree (or equivalent) in Security Management, Criminal Justice, Law, Homeland Security, or related field for GS‑09; Ph.D. (or equivalent) for GS‑11.
• Demonstrated knowledge of federal personnel suitability and security regulations.
