About the role
The European Commission’s Directorate General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) is seeking a National Staff member to support humanitarian programmes in water, sanitation, hygiene, shelter and settlements. Based in Nairobi, the Programme Associate will contribute to effective response planning, monitoring and evaluation of projects.
Key responsibilities
- Assist in appraisal, monitoring and evaluation of WASH and shelter projects, including financial assessment of proposals.
- Review partners’ reports, prepare operational documents (fiche‑ops), and draft humanitarian situation reports.
- Support the Technical Assistant and Head of Office in field visits, emergency response preparation, and map production.
- Maintain contact with implementing partners, act as liaison between DG ECHO thematic units and field partners, and manage contracts/grants database.
- Participate in meetings with local authorities, ensure visibility of DG ECHO assistance, and provide surge support when needed.
Required profile
- Relevant first‑level university degree, preferably in water engineering or a related scientific discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in WASH, Shelter & Settlements at national or international level, including at least 2 years with an NGO, UN agency, donor or similar organisation.
- Good knowledge of the EU humanitarian aid system, international NGOs, UN aid agencies and the Red Cross Movement.
- Excellent written and spoken English; knowledge of French is an asset.
Required skills
- Proficiency in MS Word.
- Proficiency in MS Excel.
