Public Works Director / Chief Engineer

About the role

Amentum is seeking a Public Works Director/Chief Engineer to lead the day‑to‑day operations of the Public Works Department for a U.S. Navy program on Diego Garcia. The role ensures efficient operation, maintenance, and improvement of utility systems, facilities, roads, and other public infrastructure in a remote, austere environment.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement policies, procedures, and schedules for infrastructure operation, maintenance, and repair while ensuring compliance with performance standards.
• Manage engineering and maintenance operations, including environmental programs, system upgrades, lifecycle management, and resource allocation.
• Oversee budgets, coordinate design and construction efforts, and ensure adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations.
• Supervise and mentor Public Works staff, prepare operational reports, and act as primary liaison with client and government representatives.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering (ABET‑accredited) and 8‑10 years of progressive public works or infrastructure experience.
• Professional Engineer license (or equivalent experience) and demonstrated leadership of large technical teams.
• Strong knowledge of utilities, roads, buildings, environmental systems, and related public works infrastructure.
• Excellent communication skills in English and ability to obtain required visas, passports, and medical clearances.

Required skills

• Proficiency with engineering software and workflow management systems.
• Advanced use of Microsoft Office Suite applications.
