Regional Safety Associate

About the role

The Regional Safety Associate supports the Regional Security Coordinators (RSCs) for East Africa and Central & Southern Africa, ensuring the safety of DG ECHO staff, offices and operations from Nairobi. The role involves security assessment, information sharing, incident tracking and the preparation of contingency plans.

Key responsibilities

• Assess the security situation at the duty station and gather verified security information for RSCs.
• Communicate security updates to the Head of Regional Office and Heads of Offices, and provide advice in the RSC’s absence.
• Liaise with security focal points of DG ECHO partners and relevant actors.
• Maintain a statistical database of security incidents and produce analytical charts.
• Assist in preparing and reviewing contingency and security plans, country risk assessments, premises surveys and SOPs.
• Manage the warden system and keep office/residence security information up‑to‑date.
• Support ongoing security training for ECHO staff.

Required profile

• Relevant university degree or equivalent professional experience in security.
• Minimum 5 years of safety and security experience at national or international level, preferably within the humanitarian system.
• Excellent command of written and spoken English.
• Valid driver’s licence.

Required skills

• Proficiency with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Knowledge of cartography principles (GPS coordinates, online mapping platforms).
• Familiarity with operational humanitarian communication systems (HF/VHF radio, satellite communications).
• Basic and advanced first‑aid techniques.
