Regional Safety & Security Director

About the role

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is recruiting a Regional Safety & Security Director for its East Africa region, which runs country programmes in Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia. The role is one of the most senior leadership positions in the region and sets the strategy for safety, security and humanitarian access. Reporting jointly to the Regional Vice President and the Senior Director for Safety and Security, the Director is a full member of the Regional Management Team and the global safety and security team, working closely with Country Directors.

Key responsibilities

• Act as principal safety and security advisor to the Regional Vice President and lead crisis management when needed
• Lead the identification, analysis and mitigation of security risks across the region, in line with IRC's global standards, and review compliance with the Security Minimum Standards
• Shape safety and security policies and duty of care and safeguarding initiatives, integrating GEDI and PEERS commitments
• Build a network of security focal points and strengthen partnerships with partners and external security counterparts
• Support principled humanitarian access, develop access guidelines and contingency plans, and follow up on breaches of the Code of Conduct
• Recruit and select key S&S positions, co-manage and mentor direct reports under the Management in Partnership model, and conduct documented performance reviews
• Deploy regularly, including at short notice, to support local teams and build staff capability to operate safely
