Senior Coordination Officer, P5

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is recruiting a Senior Coordination Officer (P5) based in Nairobi, Westlands. The role covers coordination, outreach, field missions, financial management of contributions to the East African Trust Fund, budget and funding coordination, and staff supervision.

Key responsibilities

• Manage outreach activities and design and conduct training workshops and seminars, making presentations on assigned topics.
• Lead field missions, guide external consultants and government officials, and draft mission summaries.
• Provide overall financial management, ensure timely and sufficient contributions by Contracting Parties to the East African Trust Fund, and guide Parties on payments in line with financial rules and COP decisions.
• Coordinate budget and funding activities (programme and project preparation, submissions, progress reports, financial statements) and prepare related documents such as pledges, work programmes and programme budgets.
• Serve as spokesperson and build partnerships with officials inside and outside the organization.
• Supervise, evaluate and mentor staff, and lead team members in collecting and analysing data to support data-driven planning and reporting.
• Ensure data is accessible, integrated and shared across the team.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in environmental management, environmental law, biology or natural sciences; a first-level degree plus two years of qualifying experience may be accepted instead.
• Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in planning, implementing and managing marine and coastal programmes, policies and initiatives at national, regional or international level.
• At least 5 years in intergovernmental processes, including negotiations, governing bodies and conferences of the parties.
• At least 5 years managing large marine environment programmes and projects, and 3 years in resource mobilization.
• Data analytics experience is desirable.
