Senior Software Engineer
Living Goods · Nairobi
Job description
About the role
Living Goods is looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join its Global Software Engineering team in Nairobi. You will take technical ownership of a product area of the platform, lead a small team of engineers and stay hands-on. About 70% of your time is spent building and 30% leading, and the balance shifts with the team's needs.
Key responsibilities
- Set the technical direction of your product area: architecture, design documentation and recorded decisions.
- Lead a team of two to four engineers, sequence work and use code review as the main way to teach and raise standards.
- Mentor mid-level engineers through pairing, structured feedback and handing over work.
- Represent engineering with product managers, programme teams and Ministry of Health stakeholders.
- Own the health of shipped software: dependable CI, stable releases, test coverage and open technical debt.
- Design and maintain an offline-first Android app for community health workers and supervisors.
- Build FHIR-native backend services in Kotlin and Spring Boot, plus Node.js and TypeScript services for authentication and administration.
- Ensure data integrity across devices, protect clinical and personal data in line with Kenya's Data Protection Act, and extend the platform to multiple countries through configuration.
- Carry features end to end, work with QA engineers and support end users on technical issues.
Required profile
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, IT, software engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 7+ years of professional software development, including at least 2 years leading a team or being the senior engineer others depended on.
- Proven track record of shipping and maintaining production software, preferably in digital health.
- Experience mentoring engineers and strong relational data modelling, schema migration and API design.
- Fluency with Git, code review and CI/CD; JIRA and Confluence strongly preferred.
- Open-source digital health tools such as FHIR/HL7, CHT, DHIS2, OpenMRS, OpenSRP, CommCare or OpenLMIS strongly preferred; LLM integration and WhatsApp/SMS messaging a plus.
Required skills
- Depth in either the JVM (Kotlin or Java) or TypeScript and Node.js, with willingness to work across both.
- Strong software design judgement, including MVC, ORM and RESTful APIs.
- Good knowledge of relational and non-relational databases, and of cloud and containerised hosting.
What we offer
- A competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience.
- Health insurance and a bonus opportunity.
