Sounding and Security Watch – Navy Asset Security

About the role

The Sounding and Security Watch provides continuous safety and security oversight for all U.S. Navy‑owned floating assets located in the Small Boat Basin and Deep Draft Wharf on Diego Garcia. Working overnight, the incumbent maintains situational awareness, conducts routine soundings, and operates pier lighting to ensure the assets remain secure and operational.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and secure all Navy‑owned floating assets tied up in the Small Boat Basin, performing regular checks and logging observations.
• Conduct routine soundings to verify water depth, mooring line integrity, and dock conditions, reporting any hazards such as flooding or leaks.
• Operate pier lighting, turning lights on at sunset and off at sunrise, and ensure lighting systems function correctly.
• Maintain a vigilant watch from 1600 to 0700, promptly reporting irregularities, security concerns, or safety hazards to the appropriate authorities.
• Perform outdoor patrols and respond to emergencies or environmental issues as they arise.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least one year of experience in security, marine operations, or watchstanding in a similar environment.
• Ability to work independently during overnight shifts and follow contract medical requirements.
• Physical capability to perform extended outdoor patrols.
• Proficiency in English sufficient to understand and follow emergency procedures.

Required skills

• Knowledge of marine floating assets and mooring practices.
• Understanding of security protocols for naval assets.
• Operation of lighting and basic electrical systems on piers and wharves.
• Strong observational skills for detecting hazards and irregularities.
