Surveillance Network Clinical Coordinator - Africa

About the role

We are looking for a Surveillance Network Clinical Coordinator to establish, standardize and sustain infectious disease surveillance operations across the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research‑Africa (WRAIR‑Africa) sentinel sites. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, you will act as the primary technical liaison between principal investigators, country program managers and in‑country clinical and field staff.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain a network of sentinel surveillance sites throughout the AFRICOM Area of Responsibility in partnership with ministries of health, universities and research institutions.
• Oversee sample, specimen and vector collection ensuring compliance with IRB‑approved protocols and scientific case definitions.
• Monitor ongoing surveillance activities, establish new sites as needed and adjust frequency and duration of field efforts.
• Ensure throughput of specimen processing meets performance standards across all sites.
• Coordinate with principal investigators to develop, obtain approval for and implement research protocols.
• Support the master surveillance database, guaranteeing data quality and consistency across clinical, epidemiologic and laboratory datasets.
• Provide technical advice to investigators on protocol implementation and field logistics.

Required profile

• Relevant experience in infectious disease surveillance, clinical research or public health program management.
• Demonstrated ability to work with multi‑disciplinary teams across multiple countries.
• Strong understanding of IRB processes, sample handling and field epidemiology.
• Excellent communication skills for liaison with investigators, government partners and field staff.

Required skills

• Knowledge of clinical specimen collection and vector surveillance methods.
• Familiarity with surveillance databases and data quality assurance.
• Experience coordinating multi‑site research protocols.
