Tractor Technician

About the role

The Tractor Technician is responsible for performing preventative maintenance and repairs on company tractors and trailers at our Des Moines shop. The role combines mechanical, electrical and fabrication tasks to keep the fleet operating safely and efficiently.

Key responsibilities

• Repair and maintain tractors and trailers using hand tools, precision measuring instruments and machine tools.
• Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical and electronic components, including engines, drivetrains, ABS and wiring systems.
• Utilize computer‑based diagnostic software and wiring schematics to identify faults.
• Perform routine inspections of brake systems, wheel bearings, electrical and air systems.
• Recondition, replace or fabricate parts as needed, including cutting, welding and metal fabrication.
• Maintain accurate service records and complete any additional duties assigned.

Required profile

• Technical school degree or equivalent experience in tractor/trailer repair.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Strong attention to detail and good oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work in a fast‑paced, physically demanding environment.
• Physical ability to stand, climb, stoop, kneel and lift up to 100 lb repeatedly, including overhead lifts.

Required skills

• Proficiency with hand tools, precision measuring instruments and machine tools.
• Experience using computer‑based diagnostic software and interpreting wiring schematics.
• Knowledge of mechanical, electrical and electronic systems on tractors and trailers.
• Ability to cut, weld and perform metal fabrication.
