Trial Attorney – Appellate Counsel

About the role

The National Fraud Enforcement Division of the U.S. Department of Justice is seeking qualified attorneys for permanent Appellate Counsel positions. The role involves representing the United States in federal courts of appeals on fraud‑related matters and supporting the Division’s broader enforcement efforts.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and argue appellate briefs in federal courts of appeals.
• Draft recommendations to the Solicitor General and assist with certiorari petitions, briefs in opposition, and merits briefs for the Supreme Court.
• Provide legal analysis and advice to trial attorneys and senior management on appellate decisions, policy issues, and emerging legal developments.
• Develop and deliver training on recent appellate rulings, new legislation, and evolving areas of fraud law.
• Assist with internal government requests, including those from the DOJ and Congress, and contribute to strategic litigation planning.

Required profile

• Qualified attorney with experience in appellate litigation, preferably in federal criminal or fraud contexts.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct thorough legal research, draft high‑quality legal memoranda, and edit complex legal documents.
• Strong analytical skills and the capacity to advise on legal and policy implications of appellate decisions.
• Experience collaborating with senior officials, including the Solicitor General’s Office.
