Trial Attorney

About the role

The Enforcement and Affirmative Litigation Branch seeks Trial Attorneys to lead high‑impact affirmative litigation that protects public health, safety, and ensures nationwide compliance with federal law. Applicants from any location may apply and should indicate their preferred duty location.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate unlawful conduct, lead investigations, and manage all phases of district‑court litigation, including depositions, discovery, motions, and trials.
• Draft and argue motions, write briefs, complaints, and other legal filings, and coordinate with client agencies and Department leadership.
• Represent the United States in lawsuits against state, local, or private actors to enforce federal statutes and constitutional provisions.

Required profile

• U.S. citizen or national; must pass a background investigation and drug test.
• J.D. from an accredited institution and active bar membership in good standing.
• Legal experience ranging from up to 1 year (GS‑11) to at least 4 years (GS‑15) post‑J.D., depending on grade level.
• May require a Top Secret security clearance with SCI eligibility.
• Male applicants born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with the Selective Service.
