Carpenter

About the role

The British Army Training Unit Kenya is seeking a skilled Carpenter to carry out construction and refurbishment projects across its facilities. You will work under the guidance of the Chargehand and Maintenance Manager, ensuring high‑quality workmanship while adhering to health, safety and BATUK standards.

Key responsibilities

• Perform carpentry construction, remodelling and trim work using both power and manual tools.
• Produce method statements and risk assessments for each task.
• Operate woodworking machines such as lathes, drill presses, sanders, shapers and planers.
• Hang doors, install door hardware, set windows and carry out stain‑grade finish work.
• Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings and work orders.
• Erect scaffolding or set up ladders for work at height.
• Maintain tools, equipment and PPE in a clean, safe condition.
• Account for materials and ensure proper storage and security.
• Comply with all health‑and‑safety regulations, risk assessments and site safety orders.

Required profile

• Trade Test 1 in Carpentry and Joinery or equivalent woodwork qualification.
• Minimum three years of practical carpentry experience.
• Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or equivalent.
• Ability to work on new builds or refurbishments in residential, workshop or outdoor settings.
• Understanding of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
• Capability to respond to emergencies on a 24‑hour basis.

Required skills

• Proficiency with power tools and manual carpentry tools.
• Operation of woodworking machines (lathe, drill press, sander, shaper, planer).
• Stain‑grade trim work and door/window installation.
• Blueprint and technical drawing interpretation.
• Scaffolding erection and ladder setup.
